Can you believe that nearly two quarters for 2010 have come and gone? As we head in 2H10 is your data looking statistically significant? Got those patents filed? That budget variance analysis coming together? Investor and Board presentations updated? FDA meeting in the queue? Licensing agreement terms favorable? Commercialization team in place? Beat Wall St. earnings expectations? Whatever the project du jour is for you we hope you will take a break and share a beer and your experiences with friends and colleagues at BioBeers | Boulder 2Q10 Meetup. It promises to be a good time.

ABOUT PRESENTERS:

Colorado Center for Drug Development (C2D2)

C2D2 is part of a State of Colorado-sponsored initiative to generate economic development based on bioscience research (HB-08-1001) that is creating a unique academic drug discovery model which will be available to researchers within Colorado. Utilizing the scientific expertise and resources which exist at Colorado research institutions, C2D2 will foster multi-disciplinary and inter-institutional drug discovery collaborations. Through the combination of collaborations, providing drug discovery expertise and establishing key elements of drug discovery infrastructure, C2D2 will advance drug discovery programs capable of: i. Generating discoveries that can be rapidly commercialized ii. Increase the effectiveness of research faculty to attract funding sources iii. Provide educational opportunities iv. Grow Colorado’s skilled workforce v. Create the opportunity for new Colorado companies and employment opportunities

Headwaters | MB

Headwaters MB is an independent, middle-market investment banking firm providing strategic merger and acquisitions advisory and corporate finance services to privately- and publicly-owned companies. Headwaters is headquartered in Denver, with offices in Boston, Orange County, CA and Burlington, VT. Headwaters MB recently announced the formation of a Life Sciences Group located in its Denver headquarters. This group will focus on drugs, devices, diagnostics, healthcare IT and services. Team members include Managing Directors Anant Vashi, David Traylor, Jeff Schottler and Senior Advisor Arlen Meyers, MD, MBA.

Microphage

MicroPhage's mission is to be a worldwide leader in rapid bacterial diagnostics, in both bacterial identification and antibiotic susceptibility / resistance testing, through its bacteriophage-based amplification platform for immunoassay diagnostics. The company will develop, manufacture, and market these tests into the clinical market.

A web 2.0 decentralization of healthcare platform enabling the individual to make better healthcare decisions in his or her own interest which is designed to improve health and moderate costs.

Vulano

The Vulano team has experience in developing next-generation technology, envisioning future applications, and then monetizing these intellectual assets by creating an Intellectual Property strategy, using Vulano's proprietary multi-step process, known as IPX. This process includes writing patents that create a dominant position for Vulano which enables them to capitalize on the potential of these intellectual assets, globalize their reach and dominate the marketplace.

June 10, Grand Hyatt, Denver The Bard Center Business Plan Competition seeks to promote the development of high-caliber business plans, recognize the most outstanding plans with cash and in-kind awards from area businesses, and encourage the creation of new businesses.

• Did you know…The University of Colorado at Boulder has received a $15M grant through the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act to be used toward the ongoing construction of a new biotechnology and biomedical research facility on its East Campus. Faculty and students will use the facility for research that is expected to make an impact on a wide variety of human health issues ranging from cancer, aging and cardiovascular disease to inherited diseases, vaccine development and regenerative medicine.

• Did you know…CSU on 12 May formally opened the RIC, a $53 million research incubator that officials hope will help cut years off the time it takes to bring vaccines and treatments for dangerous diseases from the laboratory to the marketplace.

• Did you know…In late March the SBA published a Notice of Final Amendments to their Small Business Innovation Research Program (SBIR) Policy Directive. For the SBIR program the SBA has raised the award threshold amounts from $100,000 to $150,000 for Phase I, and $750,000 to $1,000,000 for phase II.

• Not exactly life science specific but BusinessWeek recently declared Boulder the "top U.S. destination" for new tech startups, citing CU, the Colorado lifestyle, and the high concentration of scientists, engineers, etc. bIn addition, the New York Times recently covered Boulder as well detailing our fair city as a magnet for high-tech start-ups.

• A recent article in Nature focused, in part, on the value add of biotech clubs referenced the recently formed University of Colorado Biotech Club
